Students of linguistic subjects at the University of Graz now have the opportunity to actively get to know scientific research work as part of their studies by participating in empirical work carried out at the participating institutes.
Possibilities of participation:
- Participation in linguistic experiments
- Practical work on linguistic projects
All relevant projects of the participating institutes can be found under current participation opportunities. Participation in the relevant scientific activities can be credited as coursework. Detailed information can be found in the individual projects.
All experimental studies listed on this website have been approved by the Ethics Committee of the University of Graz. All scientific activities are subject to the strict data protection guidelines of the University of Graz.
Background
Modern linguistic research increasingly uses experimental methods. The aim of experimental methods is always to investigate specific questions. A few examples:
- whether native speakers of a language find certain sentence types acceptable or not,
- whether certain sentences can be used in certain contexts,
- whether certain sentences or expressions have a certain meaning
- whether certain intonation patterns of certain expressions are perceived by listeners and how they are interpreted.
The experimental infrastructure for linguistic research is currently being expanded at the University of Graz and more and more experimental studies are taking place. Students of linguistics subjects can take part in these studies as test subjects in order to support active research work on the one hand and to learn the basics of empirical work in linguistics on the other.
